It started in early December with " Desmond", when a 1 in 1000 year rainfall event over the central fells triggered downstream flooding to 2000 properties in Carlisle and continued throughout the month, with the UK remaining under the influence of warm, moist, tropical air which was diverted to our latitude by a raging jet stream that brought severe flooding to the likes of Appleby, Kendal and Keswick. "Eva", which was an unconnected wave depression and stationary front, then arrived over the Christmas period causing flooding across the north, particularly affecting West Yorkshire and Lancashire.
However, before we could recover, another deluge, "Frank" arrived and brought flooding to the border towns, with wet, unsettled weather continuing into the New Year and bringing further flooding in Aberdeenshire.
The economic impact of the storms Desmond and Eva, which have caused widespread flooding across northern England, has been estimated at around £1.3bn of which the cost will be picked up by the insurance industry. Will this effect premiums though..
